Did you know that only 60% of the nation's third grade students are proficient readers? The H.U.G. Reading Program helps struggling 2nd and 3rd graders become confident readers. Using a proven, successful curriculum, character development, and mentoring to improve reading skills, H.U.G. is working hard to achieve this ambitious goal.

The prison industry uses the results of the 3rd grade national reading proficiency exam to project how many prison beds will be needed in 10 years, thus contributing to the school-to-prison pipeline.

H.U.G.'s Plan

To address this problem, we are launching a city-wide Facebook campaign: HOW TO H.U.G. Help your child become a stronger reader.

We are asking city leaders, artists, and athletes to read to a child and post a picture or video on our social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Those who do so earn the title of H.U.G. Ambassador.

What You can do

We would be honored by your participation and hope that you want to become a H.U.G. Ambassador. All we ask is that you read to a child, take a picture or a very short video, and post it to any of our social media platforms.
